The Life of St. Katherine
St. Katherine was born in Cyprus at the end of the third century. She was the daughter of King Constant of Cyprus, who ruled under the Emperor Diocletian of Rome, known for his cruel persecutions of Christians. When Constant was transferred to Alexandria to rule over Egypt, his brother became administrator of Cyprus. King Constant died soon after his arrival in Alexandria, and his only daughter, Katherine, was sent to her uncle in Cyprus. When her uncle learned she had become a Christian, he tried to convert her back to the pagan religion. Katherine was unyielding in her Christian faith. On the contrary, she proclaimed the Christian faith with perseverance and determination, which forced her uncle to take harsh measures against her. Fearing consequences, he put Katherine in prison in Salamis and later in Paphos. In Salamis today there is a place which is called the "Prison of St. Katherine." Her uncle, fearing that Emperor Diocletian would put him to death for protecting finally sent her to Alexandria. The ruler of Alexandria at that time was Maxentius, the Son of Diocletian, who was as ruthless as his father.
